SEVEN GRANDFATHER STATEMENT:
The public art installation is guided by a vision of James Simon Mishibinijima, who is rooted in the traditional teachings of the Three Fire Confederacy - The Ojibwe, Odawa and the Potawatomi.
As a world-renowned artist, educator, and elder, James was guided to the heart of these teachings, known as the Seven Grandfather Teachings, which are the core principles he learned from the elders in childhood and carries with him throughout his life journey.
A vision inspired James to write a book of the Seven Grandfather teachings and a series of reflective questions to encourage individuals to consider each teaching and its relevance to their own lives. Individuals were invited to respond to questions based on their understanding and lived experiences. James encouraged participants to retain them as ongoing resources - tools for reference as they continue their life journey, individually and collectively.
The Seven Grandfather Teachings: A journey to Self-Healing provides a framework for individuals to pursue self-healing through their own understanding and experiences.
By drawing on ancestral knowledge and applying it within a modern context, this journey supports sustainable well-being, strengthens community bonds, and fosters innovative pathways towards a healthier future for all.
This art installation serves as a gathering point: a place where art, culture, and public space converge to strengthen shared values and inspire a forward-looking sense of understanding.
